I like this picture because the longer you look at it, the more evocations you see of the conflicted nature of modern day Morocco. Morocco is a country that wants to belong to the twenty first century, but for large parts still lives in de Middle Ages.
There is no balance in this picture, there is too much darkness, but also plenty of warm light. We see lemons, olives and harissa, a fiercely hot sauce, suffused by a golden light - Morocco is blessed by nature. But the faces of the two men are pitch dark, they are faceless – maybe in Morocco individuality is not a virtue. The two busy patterns of the wallpaper clash. The man on the left has his hands in his pockets.
And what is that lightbulb doing there? Is it emitting light (there is never enough light!), or is that a reflection?
